The homeowners were able to extinguish the fire by the time fire crews arrived. The fire was started by a lithium ion battery that was charging a motorized golf club bag. Damage was contained to a bedroom. There were no injuries. “You can’t underestimate the importance of working smoke alarms, which alerted the residents to the fire,” said Fire Marshal Jeff Siems. “It’s also important to realize the dangers that come along with lithium ion batteries.” To safely charge a lithium ion battery: Always follow manufacturer’s instructions. Never leave a charging battery unattended. Unplug the battery when it’s fully charged. Don’t mix and match parts for the battery. Only use manufacturer-recommended parts.
