Edina Arts & Culture Commission Calls for Public Art Sculptures
Edina, Minn., Feb. 16, 2017 – Public Art Edina, a working group of the Arts & Culture Commission, annually
celebrates public art through several outdoor sculpture exhibits displayed throughout the community. The call
for submissions for this rotating art exhibit is now open.
Over 275 artists and arts organizations have already been invited to submit entries for the 2017-2018 exhibit.
Last year, the City received a record number of 39 entries and hopes to see the same level of interest again.
“Public Art Edina is in its 14th year and we’re pretty proud of the public support that has developed in those
years. This year, we hope to see interactive and engaging pieces that encourage visitors to approach and discuss
them,” said Art Center General Manager Michael Frey, staff liaison for Public Art Edina. “
This year, there is space for nine new sculptures at 50th & France, Grandview Square Park and the Edina
Promenade. Frey also noted that submissions should be able to withstand Minnesota weather. Particular
interest will be given to sculptures with fiber optics involved.
The sculptures will be selected by the Public Art Working Group, two representatives of the 50th &F rance
Business & Professional Association and members of the Arts & Culture Commission.
After the selected sculptures are chosen and installed, the public can get involved by voting for their favorite
sculpture in person, through the City’s mobile app, Edina To Go, or online at EdinaMN.gov/edina_public_art.
An opening reception will be held 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Pinstripes, 3849 Gallagher Drive.
The artist behind the winning entry will receive $1,500, the second-place award winner will receive $1,200 and
the third-place award winner will receive $750. The top three People’s Choice winners will be invited to exhibit
their sculptures for an additional year for which they will receive honorariums of $500. The 2016 winners were
“Peacock Display” by Jim Dehne, “Horse Play” by Jim Dehne and “Bonded Souls” by James Bearden,
respectively.
Applications are due 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 17. For more information about Public Art in Edina or for
