We were glad he got paramedic experience in the Twin Cities and applied for Edina when the position opened up. He’s solid guy, so we’re excited.” Nordwig grew up in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Minnesota and earned a bachelor’s degree in Public Health/Health & Wellness in 2008. He took Emergency Medical Training at the Red Cross and went onto the Fire/Medic program at Chippewa Valley Technical College. He worked as an ER Tech/EMT at Luther/Mayo in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He started interning with the City in the fall of 2012, and worked 20 five-hour shifts. He worked at Hennepin County EMS for a few years before taking this job with the Edina Fire-Rescue & Inspections Department. “Nick worked at Hennepin County EMS for a few years until landing his dream job here at Edina Fire. He’s been working hard over the past couple of months, even getting in on several fires in his first two days on shift,” said Schmitz. Nordwig took an interest in a firefighter career when he was working as a phlebotomist at Park Nicollet. A friend worked as a firefighter and convinced him to look into a career in fire and Emergency Medical Services. City Clerk Deb Mangen administered the Oath to Nordwig. He was pinned with Badge No. 92 by his mother and given a Challenge Coin. “The last item we want to give Nick is his Challenge Coin,” said Jeff Siems, Assistant Fire Chief. “The purpose of the coin is to symbolize who we are and what we stand for. As Nick moves through his career, he will meet challenges along the way. We hope you will proudly carry this coin with you.” For more information on the Fire-Rescue & Inspections Department, visit EdinaMN.gov/Fire. -30-
