The hydrants on the east side of Minnesota Highway 100 will be flushed during the week of April 24 and hydrants on the west side of Highway 100 will be flushed during the week of May 1. The Public Works Department flushes the hydrants twice a year to help remove some of the material that settles in the water mains and to get fresh water running through them. Crews also check that all the hydrants and gate valves are operational for emergency use. During the flush, some residents will receive rust-colored water that could stain laundry, but it is safe to drink. Because the water system is a “looped system,” red water may appear anywhere in the Edina during either flush. Residents should check for signs of discoloration prior to washing clothes. If the water is discolored when the tap is turned on, simply run the water until it is clear. Residents who experience any rust stains in their laundry can pick up RoVer Rust Remover stain remover free of charge from the City’s Public Works & Park Maintenance Facility, 7450 Metro Blvd. Hydrants are flushed in the spring and fall. All hydrants are flushed during the spring flush, while the fall process is more selective. Increased water usage during summer months keeps minerals suspended in the water and moving through the system, therefore fewer flushes are needed in the fall.
