Those who come to Pamela Park will remove leaves, dirt and trash that otherwise would be carried into Minnehaha Creek with the next rainfall. Then they will paint messages reminding people not to put trash, chemicals or old motor oil into the streets or storm drains. Water that flows into storm drains empties directly into lakes and streams, unfiltered and full of whatever debris is picked up along the way. To protect Minnehaha Creek and other waterways, it’s imperative to keep the storm water as clean as possible. Gloves, trash bags and other supplies will be provided, and refreshments will be available at the event, which runs 10 a.m. to noon starting at the park, 4301 W. 58th St. Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and clothes they don’t mind getting dirty. Advance registration is required. The April 29 event is sponsored by MCWD and the City of Edina in partnership with Freshwater Society, Target, Berne Scale, Tonka Bay Marina and 1-800-GOT-JUNK. This public service project is part of “Jump In & Make a Splash!” a series of community events celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD). The series concludes Nov. 2 with the Sunset Celebration at St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church in Minneapolis with live music, food and drink. People who attend at least five events qualify for half-price admission and those who attend all nine events get in for free!
