Ribbon Cutting June 1 For New Playground At Weber Park
Edina, Minn., May 24, 2017 – People are invited to a June 1 ribbon cutting for a larger playground with
new equipment, including multiple slides, a raft swing and a 20-foot zip line in Weber Park.
The playground equipment, designed to serve children ages 2-12, replaces the previous playground structure
that had been installed in 1997 in the park, located in the Morningside Neighborhood.
“Residents will enjoy this updated playground,” said Edina Recreation Supervisor Eric Boettcher. “The
Morningside Neighborhood Association was very involved in the design and they should be proud of what
they came up with.”
Residents helped the City save money on the project by choosing an engineered wood fiber safety surface
instead of the rubber one originally planned. They also gave feedback that resulted in changes including taller
climbing areas, a longer zip line, a higher center structure (now 8 feet) and more balance activities, including
the raft swing and a wobble sphere. For parents, the playground includes two benches to sit back and relax
while keeping watch on the kids.
The new playground is roughly 400 square feet larger than the old one and now includes an ADA-accessible
path and parking spot. It costs $100,000, well under the original $175,000 budgeted for it.
Northland Recreation, which also designed the playgrounds at Pamela and McGuire parks, worked with the
City on this project.
People are welcome to attend the ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 1, at Weber Park, 4115 Grimes
Ave. S. Light refreshments will be served. The new playground is already open for use.
