During the open houses, residents will be asked to give their ideas on what should go in that newly created 2- to 3-acre park space and areas around it. Other cities that have put similar lids over roadways have found space for everything from walking and biking trails to retail stores and restaurants. City staff will be on hand to help residents learn about how these projects work, with formal 20-minute presentations at 6 and 7:30 p.m. Edina City Hall is at 4801 W. 50th St. Edina is in the early stages of this project, called Grandview Green, which aims to develop a green lid between the Vernon Avenue/50th Street and Eden Avenue bridges. Putting a lid over Highway 100 would create a level surface above the traffic lanes, which would still run underneath. The City is exploring how the lid could serve to connect neighborhoods, enhance bicycle and pedestrian routes, increase sustainability practices and improve the economic productivity of the land around the highway. By the numbers, it could mean up to 13 acres of new, buildable land; more than 2,500 potential new parking spaces; and more than 2.4 million square feet of private development. “There’s a tremendous benefit to the community that is possible with this type of project,” Economic Development Manager Bill Neuendorf said. “Most significant is re-connecting neighbors who live on opposite sides of the busy highway by means of a public space.” For more information about the Grandview Green project, contact Neuendorf at bneuendorf@EdinaMN.gov or visit EdinaMN.gov/GrandviewGreen. -30-
