The City now has a total of nine recognized neighborhoods, including Arden Park, Chowen Park, Creek Knoll, Concord, Lake Cornelia, Morningside, Pamela Park, South Cornelia and Strachauer Park neighborhoods. “I felt like we already had a lot of active groups in our neighborhood, so I had already been reaching out to other people who were in support of making it an officially recognized neighborhood,” said Marie Johnson, a South Cornelia Neighborhood resident who helped complete the process to become City-recognized. “It’s only three steps to become recognized and it’s another good reason to get the neighborhood together.” To become a City-recognized neighborhood, neighborhoods must establish an organizing team of interested and involved community members and notify City staff that they are interested in becoming recognized, host a neighborhood-wide meeting and submit an application to the City. Johnson encourages other neighborhoods that aren’t yet recognized to consider it. “If you’re intimidated by a formal meeting, you can do it as a pizza party or a flash potluck meeting. The process was about gathering neighbors together rather than an official meeting and the focus is about finding shared interests. I think it’s also a really great way to pull the different generations together,” she said. “And now that’re recognized we can reach out to other recognized neighborhoods and join in on their activities that they’re hosting.” Edina Neighborhood Connections recognized neighborhoods are provided several benefits from the City. Some of the benefits include free City meeting space, annual printing, participation in the Neighborhood Engagement Officer program, neighborhood page on the City’s website and listing in the About Town magazine. The City recognizes the importance of neighborhoods and encourages them to get involved when significant neighborhood projects are being discussed or proposed. Becoming a City-recognized neighborhood provides the City with another way to communicate with neighborhoods.
