Public Art People’s Choice Award Winners Announced
Edina, Minn., Oct. 26, 2017 – Public Art Edina, a working group of the Arts & Culture Commission, has
named the 2017 People’s Choice Award Winners. Community members voted online and at various in-person
voting locations to select three People’s Choice Award winners.
“Lost in Space” by Judd Nelson of Wayzata, Minnesota, placed first; “Large Stone Mobile #2” by David
Montague of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, placed second; and “Human Dynamics” by Andrew Arend of Rochester,
Minnesota, placed third. “Lost in Space” and “Large Stone Mobile #2” are both located at Grandview Square.
“Human Dynamics” is located on the Edina Promenade.
Nelson built “Lost in Space,” a depiction of a young girl engrossed in a cell phone, as a social statement and he
hopes his sculpture will entice people to put down their phones for a while.
“I’ve seen people get lost in their smart phones and just drift away. This sculpture is based on my daughter
when she was in high school,” said Nelson. “Edina residents seem to really like a wide variety of sculptures. The
City has some beautiful sites to place the sculptures and to receive another award just reassures you that
you’re connecting, and that’s what I want to do.”
Nelson received first place in the 2015 People’s Choice Awards for his piece “Letting Go.” He has shown
several pieces on the Edina Promenade and 50th & France over the years and has a permanent piece called
“Slapshot” at Braemar Arena.
All eligible entries included:
1. “Lunar Trap” by James Bearden at the Edina Promenade
2. “Human Dynamics” by Andrew Arend at the Edina Promenade
3. “Full Sail” by Jon Kamrath at the Edina Promenade
4. “Crescendo” by Sam Spiczka at the Edina Promenade
5. “Rungs to Rings” by David Versluis at 50th & France
6. “Large Stone Mobile #2” by David Montague at Grandview Square Park
7. “Lost in Space” by Judd Nelson at Grandview Square Park
All sculptures in the rotating exhibit will be on display through May 2018. Recipients of the People’s Choice
Award winners receive $1,500, $1,200 and $750, respectively, and are invited to show their sculptures for an
additional year, for which they receive honorariums of $500.
Several other permanent public art displays can be found throughout the City. For more information, visit
