The exhibit will feature 20 artists from around the Midwest, each showcasing 10 cups of their own design, style and understanding of what a cup is. “Minnesota is a hotbed for clay artists,” said Pottery Studio Manager and Gallery Coordinator Sandra Shaughnessy. “This exhibition will present clay artists from Wisconsin, Missouri, Maryland, Illinois and Minnesota and it includes regional artists from Minneapolis, Farmington, Scandia and Edina. The opening reception for “200 Clay Cups” will be held 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24 at the Edina Art Center, 4701 W. 64th St. Well known, Minnesota native Bob Briscoe will teach a workshop called “Pots Made To Be Used” before the exhibit opens, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. “The concept of this exhibit comes from potters making cups and people using cups. The cup is an integral part of the day for most people. The cups on display range from a simple exercise to a complex concept approached by the potter.” Shaughnessy added, “With this exhibit, it will be interesting to see what the artists determine a cup is: Does it have a lip? Does it have a saucer with it? Does it have a handle? All the cups will be different.” Both the exhibit and the opening reception are free and open to the public. The “Pots Made To Be Used” workshop costs $43 for non-members and $39 for members.
