The City now has a total of eight recognized neighborhoods, including the Arden Park, Chowen Park, Creek Knoll, Concord, Lake Cornelia, Morningside, Pamela Park and Strachauer Park neighborhoods. “Neighborhoods are the backbone of any community and Edina steps up to the plate to support neighborhoods,” said Lake Cornelia Neighborhood Representative Nora Davis. “This is an opportunity to learn more about the City. I was also blown away by all the wonderful people in my community that I’d never met before and that’s what this is all about.” Davis noted that the process is lengthy, but the benefits are worth it. The City is also continually looking for additional ways in which the City can offer new benefits and provide more ways to get involved. “We had over 50 people attend our last meeting and so many people came up and said thank you for doing this. It really is a process, but I learned a lot through it and it never hurts anyone to learn more. We’re lucky to live in such a supportive community,” she said. “We had Project Coordinator MJ Lamon walk us through the process and that was incredibly helpful.” To become a City-recognized neighborhood association, neighborhoods must establish an organizing team of interested and involved community members, notify City staff that they are interested in becoming recognized, host a neighborhood-wide meeting and submit an application to the City. Recognized neighborhoods often are more involved in the early stages of projects and initiatives and have more opportunities to communicate with the City. The City communicates with City-recognized neighborhoods when significant neighborhood projects are being discussed or proposed, public hearings are held about issues that could impact a neighborhood, a developer requests a neighborhood meeting for the purpose of reviewing a sketch plan or when the City plans to organize a neighborhood group for resident input. “As a City, we encourage engagement in community projects and Edina’s Neighborhood Connections program creates a platform for the City not only to share information directly with the neighborhood associations, but neighborhood associations have the ability to communicate back to the City,” said Lamon.
