The property manager called 911 and sounded the alarm after seeing smoke coming into the hallway from an apartment. The occupant of the apartment was able to extinguish the fire before fire crews arrived. There were no injuries. Unattended cooking led to the fire. According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking is the No. 1 cause of home fires and injuries. “Always remain alert and keep an eye on what you’re cooking, especially when frying foods,” said Fire Inspector Brian Hanrahan. “Also, keep anything that can catch fire – oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels – away from the stove. The occupant was alerted to the fire because of the building’s alarms. However, the unit’s smoke detector had been disconnected. Hanrahan reminds residents that smoke alarms should never be tampered with and that they should be tested once a month and replaced every 10 years. “On a related note, technology evolves on fire detection, too. Smoke alarms should be replaced 10 years after their manufacture date,” he said.
