While its general name for the time being
is “40th & France,” Edina residents have
preferred to call this unique piece of
land by a more expressive name, “Weber
Woods,” for quite some time.
At a Morningside Neighborhood
Association (MNA) Steering Committee
meeting held in June, members recounted
hearing from residents of varying
ages that these woods were a beloved
neighborhood spot in which to play during
their childhood, and that they hoped it
would remain for future generations.
After months of negotiations with the
City of Minneapolis, that hope is now a
reality as the cities of St. Louis Park and
Edina finalized the purchase of the land
in late June.

“We had actually been in conversations
with the cities of St. Louis Park and
Minneapolis for the past 10 years about
potential acquisition of this property,” said
Parks & Recreation Director Ann Kattreh.
“It’s a unique opportunity that we were
very fortunate to have.”
The vacant land is located at 3940
France Ave. and is situated directly on
the Edina-St. Louis Park border. The site
encompasses 15 acres of wooded areas,
open fields, walking trails and a water
utilities building. In the purchase, Edina
acquired 9.77 acres of the land and St.
Louis Park 4.77 acres.
While this space will add an oft-desired
parcel of park land to Edina, it was also
sought after for more practical reasons.
“Storm water was a very significant
reason that the City Council was
interested in the site,” Kattreh explained.
“There’s a need for additional storm water
management in that area, which could
include the expansion of a storm water
pond to help residents in that area with
flooding issues.”
With an increasing number of rain events,
it is important to have the added capacity
for storm water, agreed MNA Steering
Committee members.
This land acquisition has also shown to be
incredibly significant for local residents. A
Morningside Neighborhood meeting was
held in November of 2014 to discuss the
property, and about 70 residents from
Edina, St. Louis Park and Minneapolis
were in attendance.
MNA Steering Committee members added
they were “grateful that the City Council
had voted to protect the beauty and
natural conditions of the woods.”
For being a rarity in such a developed
city as Edina, the Parks & Recreation
Department foresees keeping the land for
its popular current usage: as an unofficial
dog park.
“We need more dog parks in Edina and
we’ve heard from many people that they
want to continue to have a dog park
amenity there,” added Kattreh. “However,
if we were to do that, we would make it a
formal dog park with fencing, and all the
other amenities we would like to see in a
dog park.”
Frequent users of the woods, Mab Nulty
and her husband have been walking their
dog Murphy in Weber Woods the past 16
years. “Weber Woods is a little oasis in the
middle of the city and although I know it
so well by now, Murphy and I still find new
routes to explore.”
Beyond being just a peaceful trail, Weber
Woods is also where neighbors get to
know one another. “I especially love how
the woods … give the neighborhood dogs
a chance to meet each other. Their people
like to say hello, too,” said Nulty.
While no plans are set in stone for the
land’s use, Kattreh said, “We’ll have a
very public process and eventually hire
a landscape architect to help design a

master plan for the area, but there is not
one in the works at this time.”
Remarking on his latest walk through the
woods, Edina resident Bob Kearney added,
“[my neighbor] snapped a picture of a
dense stand of woods. I asked why and he
said, ‘I still can’t believe this is a few blocks
from my house.’ It is an unusual parcel
that way; much greener and rawer than a
conventional city park … Edina has done a
smart thing by purchasing this land.”
The land was purchased by the cities for a
combined total of $1.7 million, with Edina
contributing $1.072 million for its two-
thirds of the land. Each city will own its
portion of the land, yet Kattreh envisions
a joint master plan for the property
developing in the future.

PARK BOARD MEETINGS
The Edina Parks & Recreation Department welcomes
any suggestions regarding City of Edina programs
and facilities. The Park Board meets at 7 p.m. on the
second Tuesday of each month. These meetings are
open to the public.
HEARING ASSISTANCE/ACCESSIBILITY
Sign language interpreters are available to help residents who are deaf or hard of hearing participate in City of Edina activities and meetings. Some programs, meetings and special events also are equipped with a hearing assistance system. For information, call Amanda Clarke at 952-826-0433.

Register online beginning 8 a.m. Aug. 22 for residents
or Aug. 29 for non-residents. Our registration system
is available 24 hours a day until classes are full or
registration closes for each program.

CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY
All refund requests will be assessed a
$5 administrative fee. Full refunds are
given only when a program or reservation
is canceled by the Parks & Recreation
Department. No refunds will be given for
cancellations requested less than five
business days prior to the start of a program
or reservation. Under the discretion of the
Parks & Recreation Director, partial credit
will be considered if cancellation is due to
injury or serious illness.
FINANCIAL AID
Several civic organizations have contributed
to the Edina Challenge Fund at the Edina
Community Foundation, which supports the
Grant-In-Aid Program. The program provides
assistance to individuals who cannot afford
registration fees. For more information, please
call the Parks & Recreation Department at
952-826-0367. If you would like to support
the Edina Challenge Fund, please contact
the Edina Community Foundation at
952-833-9573.
CONFIRMATION
A registration confirmation will be emailed to
you at the time your registration is processed.
If the program is full, you will be given the
option of being placed on a waiting list.

All participants are expected to exhibit
appropriate behavior at all times while
participating, spectating, using facilities
or attending a program conducted or
sponsored by the City of Edina Parks &
Recreation Department. The following
guidelines are designed to provide safe
and enjoyable activities for all participants:
• Show respect to all participants,
spectators and City staff.
• Take direction from City staff.
• Refrain from using abusive or foul
language.
• Refrain from causing bodily harm
to self, City staff or others.
• Refrain from damaging equipment,
supplies or facilities.

School’s out and it’s our third-annual Glow Dodge Ball
night, with DJ, sound equipment, wireless mic and

TEEN TRIPS: INDOOR PAINTBALL —
SPLATBALL
Grades 7-12
Come along on a trip to Splatball, Inc., the
oldest known operating paintball field in
the world, located in Minneapolis. We will play
paintball for two hours on Splatball’s indoor field. The
fee includes all required equipment and 100 paintballs.
Additional paintballs may be purchased at the site.

Be inspired by art created by Vincent Van Gogh, Claude
Monet, Edward Munch and Claes Oldenburg. We will
recreate famous works of art like Monet’s “Water Lilies,”
Munch’s “The Scream,” Oldenburg’s “Spoonbridge and
Cherry” and many others – all in clay. Make room to display
these masterpieces! The projects your child creates in this

JUNIOR WINTER DEVELOPMENT
The Junior Development program is designed for
experienced junior players preparing for competition
at the high school JV or Varsity level.
Players will focus on their fundamentals with the goal
of developing repeating swings. Video analysis using
the V1 Coaching System will help students compare
their swings to the pros and visually identify areas for
improvement. The group will compete in short game
challenges and full-swing competitions. Players will
also be evaluated for their golf fitness and provided
with strengthening exercises.
The program is taught by PGA Member Roger
Fahrenkrug, a Braemar Golf instructor for 20 years.
Fahrenkrug has experience teaching all levels
of Juniors including several Minnesota Junior
PGA champions, as well as other Minnesota PGA
professionals and amateur golfers of all skill levels.
The fee includes five private lessons, 9 one-hour
supervised group sessions, practice aids and a
learning manual. Classes are limited to six students
per hour.

SOCCER SHOTS SPORTS CAMPS
Soccer Shots is the national leader in youth soccer development
for children ages 2 to 8. The program has been created under
the guidance of childhood education specialists, MLS and USL
professional soccer players, and experienced and licensed soccer
coaches. Innovative lesson plans are developmentally appropriate
and tailored specifically to the three distinct age groups. Using
these creative and age-appropriate curricula and infusing each
lesson plan with enthusiasm and structured activity, Soccer Shots
aims to leave a lasting, positive impact on every child served.

Soccer Shots Mini introduces children to fundamental
soccer principles, such as using your feet, dribbling and

For nearly 15 years, Soccer Shots has been introducing
soccer to children ages 3 to 5. Using creative and imaginative

teamwork and appreciation. Soccer Shots will expose your

level athletes looking to learn and develop in the

ELITE WRESTLER
Recommended for Grades 2-5
Hornet Elite wrestlers consist of new to advanced
wrestlers who are striving to move their experience from
the practice mats into tournament play. These athletes will
focus primarily on building confidence, self-discipline and
a strong wrestling foundation. The 1.5-hour practices two
to three times a week will consist of core strength training,
fundamental to advanced wrestling technique drills, and
games. Participants also have opportunities to wrestle
in scrimmages and scheduled weekend tournaments
designed to elevate their experience, confidence and
motivation. Elite Wrestlers are still out for a fun time,
but they are looking to up their skills and wrestle more
matches.
FIREARM SAFETY TRAINING –
SPRING 2017
Ages 11 and up
The Edina Parks & Recreation Department offers the Min-
nesota Department of Natural Resources Firearm Safety
Training to youth ages 11 and older, and adults. Parents of
students are encouraged to observe the class.
EDINA WRESTLING

Need a night away from the kids? Bring them to
Edinborough Park for a night of fun. The kids will have a
pizza dinner, play in Adventure Peak and the Great Hall,
make arts and crafts and watch a movie! Dinner will be
served at 6 p.m. You can drop your kids off at 5:30 p.m. and
pick them up by 9:30 p.m. Children must be potty-trained.
The fee is $25 per child or $20 per child for families with
multiple children attending. The discount is not available

Another winter outdoor ice rink season will soon be here.
The City plans to open 12 outdoor ice rinks at local parks,
weather permitting, beginning Dec. 19. Watch the City of
Edina’s website for up-to-date opening information.
The Parks & Recreation Department will accept applications
beginning Sept. 1 for ice rink attendants. Apply online at
EdinaMN.gov/jobs. You must be 16 years of age or older
to apply.

CENTENNIAL LAKES
In the winter months, Centennial Lakes Park offers one of
the Twin Cities’ finest outdoor skating venues. Visitors can
skate across 10 acres of carefully maintained ice or take a
spin on one of the Park’s Norwegian ice sleds. Afterward,
guests can relax by one of the Hughes Pavilion’s three
fireplaces while sipping a cup of hot chocolate from the
concessions stand. For the convenience of Park visitors,
Centennial Lakes rents figure and hockey skates for
children and adults.
WINTER ICE FESTIVAL
Come celebrate winter at Centennial Lakes Park!
The Winter Ice Festival will be held 1 to 5 p.m.
Jan. 8, 2017. During the festival, we will have ice-
sculpting demonstrations, horse-drawn wagon
rides, face painting for a small fee, skate and sled
rental and ice skating.

Braemar Golf Dome
The Braemar Golf Dome practice facility is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily now until mid-April. The dome is the largest and longest-hitting in the Twin Cities area with 46 tee areas on two levels
and a large practice putting green. Braemar Golf Dome has 10 TrackTee dividers. The TrackTee calculates the distance and speed after each shot and the result is displayed on the easy
to read screen on the Track Tee divider. The TrackTee is great for golfers of all skill levels to help improve your practice experience. The dome is located at 7420 Braemar Blvd. For more

Our five PGA Professionals provide lessons for all ages

INDOOR BEAN BAG LEAGUE
Are you looking for a fun activity to get through the

FEED MY STARVING CHILDREN
DAY OF SERVICE
Help turn hunger into hope with your own two hands by packing nutritious meals for
starving children around the world. This day trip to the local non-profit Feed My Starving
Children (FMSC) in Chanhassen is scheduled over the fall MEA school break, making it a
great opportunity to volunteer with your grandchild or other youngster. You will hand-pack
meals specially formulated for malnourished children, and FMSC sends them to partners
around the world where they’re used to help orphanages, schools, clinics and feeding
programs to break the cycle of poverty. You don’t need to bring anything, as all food and
materials are provided, but be prepared to stand for most of the two-hour volunteer shift.
Each adult may bring one child in grades K-2 or up to two children in Grade 3 or above if
you wish, or simply register on your own or with other adults. Your service will be very
much appreciated. The bus is provided by P.S. Realty Group/EXIT Realty Metro.

Deb LeAir is back! This workshop is a one-day
demonstration and hands-on workshop focusing on
carving the surface of three-dimensional objects and pots
with the use of terra sigillata as a surface treatment. The
workshop includes discussion on carving, how designs
are developed and the use of washes and glaze as a final
treatment. Workshop participants are asked to bring one
vessel (6 inches high by 4 inches deep with half-inch
walls) to learn to carve and develop a design. Additional
instruction with Deb will include how to control the
drying process and complete the piece with colored terra
sigillata. The presentation will include a slide lecture and
question-and-answer session with the audience.
BEGINNER
Student has no experience in the medium or needs
instruction with basic skills.
INTERMEDIATE
Student can manage basic fundamental skills: wedging,
centering, trimming. Student is interested in experimenting
with a variety of techniques and materials. Student has
taken a minimum of three previous sessions in clay.

Taylors Falls, Minnesota
Jeff Oestreich was an apprentice at Bernard Leach Pottery from 1969 to 1971. He studied art and ceramics at Bemidji State
University and the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities. Jeff has been an artist-in-residence and instructor at The Penland
School of Crafts in the Blue Ridge Mountains outside of Asheville, North Carolina; Anderson Ranch School of Crafts in
Snowmass Village, Colorado; and Red Lodge Clay Center in Montana; among others. He has received numerous grants and
fellowships and continues to create his functional wares from his home studio in Taylors Falls, Minnesota — a host site on the
annual St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour.

Wood fire your pottery with Zac Spates at his beautiful,
newly rebuilt pottery studio in Hudson, Wisconsin.
Students will bring bisque-fired pottery to Zac’s studio to
glaze, wad and fire on site. Each student may bring enough
pots to cover with overhangs, a template of 24 inches by
24 inches with a height not to exceed 12 inches. The entire
class will participate in the loading, firing and unloading
of the kiln. Bisque firing at the Edina Art Center will be

PAINTING ‘LAKESCAPES’

Learn to paint “Lakescapes,” from real to abstract. Study
compositions that have depth and color. Students may
bring photos and/or sketches from which they will create
paintings. Students should bring canvases, at least 18
inches by 24 inches, as well as paints (oils or acrylics),
odorless thinner, brushes and a disposable palette.
Students will work on more than one painting at a time
due to the layering technique needed to create depth,

Though vastly different in subject matter, the approach
to representing a still-life, portrait or landscape in paint
follows the same basic principles. It is not about what one
is painting; rather, how one uses the visual information
provided. During Jake Posey’s training in the Atelier manner,
he learned a method for translating the three-dimensional
world around him onto a flat surface using paint. He learned
to recreate natural effects, explore conceptual form and set
technical relationships that simplify the process of painting.
Students will begin by using still-life setups as a playground
in which to learn these basic observational properties. Oil
paints are encouraged, but other mediums are acceptable.

A DAY FOR DRAWING

NATURE HAIKU WRITING
Jeannie Hanson
Inspired by the landscape around Lake Cornelia and the
haiku poetry tradition, this class will guide participants
in the writing of nature haiku. These mini-poems of
three lines — five, seven and five syllables, respectively —
could be considered the first Twitter. Working creatively
with word structure is wonderful on its own; it can also
accompany visual works. Maximum 12.
Food can be a lightning rod for passion. That passion is
evident in Cooked to Death, the new mystery anthology
from Nodin Press of St. Louis Park. Each story revolves
around food – its origin, preparation, consumption and,
in some cases, its convenience as a murder weapon.
Many of the stories are written by locally and nationally
known mystery authors. Mirroring the theme, the table

stories into courses: appetizers, soups, entrees and

OPEN STUDIO TIME
We offer Open Studio time in painting, pottery and jewelry
to members registered in a current class as a benefit of
membership.
RESIDENT MEMBERS
To thank residents who are members of the Edina Art
Center, we offer a $5 discount on classes. You must be a
resident and a member to receive this offer.
RECIPROCAL MEMBERSHIP
As a thank you to our members of the Edina Art Center, we
offer a reciprocal membership with the Walker Art Center.
Please inquire about details.
CLASS SUPPLIES
Class supply lists will be emailed to students after class
registration is complete. Our Art Center supply store has
been downsized considerably and will only carry sumi-e
supplies, pottery tools, pencils, erasers and sketchbooks.
Members receive a 10 percent discount on art supplies.
Supplies used in adult classes are to be purchased by the
student.
GIFT SHOP/GALLERY MEMBER DISCOUNTS
Sorry! The 10 percent membership discount does not apply
to artist-created work found in the Gift Shop or purchases
made in our Margaret Foss Gallery. We support our featured
artists by asking a minimal 35 percent commission on work
sold. We believe it is important that no further discount be
asked of the artist.
CLASS CANCELLATIONS
We run classes with as few as three students. Unfortunately,
we cannot guarantee a class will run though you may have
registered.
If We Cancel a Class —
If class has low enrollment and needs to be canceled,
you will be notified 48 hours prior to the class start date.
You will be notified by phone and email. Please check
your email and voicemail before you leave for class. If
you are uncertain, please give us a call at 952-903-5780.
If You Need to Cancel Your Registration —
If you let us know at least five days before your class is to
begin, please choose from these options:
• Transfer Credit
• Refund Credit to your credit card
• Refund Check
• Tax Deduction
• Gift Certificate to the Edina Art Center
If you let us know fewer than five days before your class is to
begin, please choose from these options:
• Transfer Credit
• Tax Deduction
MISSED CLASSES
Sorry! We do not give refunds for scheduled classes that you
registered for and were unable to attend. There are three
exceptions that wherein we will offer a transfer credit:
• Death in Family/Funeral
• Family Medical Emergency
• Observance of Religious Holiday
MAKE-UP CLASSES
Makeups will be arranged only when a class meeting is
canceled by the Art Center. If an instructor has another class
similar to your class, a make-up session is at the discretion of
the instructor.
HALF-CLASSES
The Edina Art Center offers half-classes for those individuals
that are unable to take a full class.
Our policy for Half-Classes is:
• The Art Center Front Desk staff places your name on
the Half-Class Wait List with the dates you are available.
• Half-Class sessions are first-half/last-half only.
• Students are notified 24 hours before the class starts if
a half-space is available.
• We provide the dates of your availability to the
instructor to verify attendance.
• Only the Edina Art Center staff authorizes half-space
enrollment. Instructors do not have the authority to
approve half-class enrollment. Please talk to the Front
Desk before speaking with your instructor.
• Your enrollment is not guaranteed if you placed your
name on the Half-Class Wait-List. The list will be first
come, first served if an opening is available.
PRO-RATED CLASSES
The Edina Art Center does not pro-rate class tuition. The
only exception is Art Academy student registrations.

ADOPT-A-PARK
The City of Edina encourages individuals
or groups to participate in the Adopt-A-
Park program. Participants make a two-
year commitment during which they pick
up litter at their adopted park at least
twice a year. They also notify the City of
any safety hazards in the park.
The program is open to individuals,
families, religious or community service
organizations, neighborhood associations
and other groups. At each adopted park,
the City will provide a sign identifying the
volunteer group or individual.

RESERVE A PARK
The Cornelia School Park, Countryside
Park, Pamela Park, Todd Park, Walnut
Ridge Park and Weber Park buildings are
available for rent for birthday parties,
small reunions, neighborhood meetings
and other events.
The parks offer pleasant buildings, year-
round outdoor activities, clean restrooms
and easy parking.

PICNIC SHELTER
RESERVATIONS
Anyone living in Edina may reserve the
picnic shelters at Rosland, Utley and
Wooddale Parks by calling the Edina Parks
& Recreation Department at 952–826-0367
after March 1. Reservations assure space in
the shelter, but not exclusive use of the park.
BICYCLE & WALKING PATHS
The City of Edina offers several scenic
paths for bicycling, walking, jogging,
cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
To ensure the safety and enjoyment
of everyone, motorized vehicles are
prohibited on the paths.
THE BREDESEN PARK BIKE PATH
The Bredesen Park bike path is two miles long and
located south of Vernon Avenue and east of Gleason
Road. Also available is a separate two-mile walking
path. These paths encircle Bredesen Park, which has
been developed as a nature study area. Access to
the paths is on Vernon Avenue or Olinger Boulevard.
THE LAKE CORNELIA PATH
The 1.1-mile Lake Cornelia path encircles the
northern portion of Lake Cornelia, south of the
Crosstown Highway and west of the Edina Aquatic
Center. Access is on 66th Street or West Shore Drive.
