Consultant Confluence, with direction from the Parks & Recreation Department and the Parks & Recreation Commission, developed concept plans and refined them. This summer, the City Council approved the final Master Plan for the park, clearing the way for the designs to come to life. “The Fred Richards Park Master Plan creates a very exciting new and unique park in Edina,” said Ann Kattreh, Parks & Recreation Director. “Fred Richards Park will provide opportunities for year-round access, activities, amenities and a restored natural ecosystem for all of Edina’s residents to rest, play and learn.” Fred Richards Park will subtly divide into sections, providing different experiences for people and nature. Park plans are organized around these main areas: Nature Bank The western side of the park will feature water, woods, wetlands and open spaces returned to nature. It’s the perfect spot for relaxation or learning about our surroundings. Planned features include: • Pollinator garden • Wetlands restoration • Nature play areas • Boardwalk over water areas • Places to sit and relax Neighborhood Park Located on the eastern edge of the park, this section provides connections to the Parklawn Neighborhood and a play spot for children. Planned features include: • Traditional playground with play structures • Picnic shelter By Debbie Townsend and Dawn Wills A former golf course is poised to become the next gem among Edina’s renowned parks. Fred Richards Park is being created on the 43 acres of the former Fred Richard Golf Course, which closed in 2014. At nearly double the size of Centennial Lakes Park, Fred Richards Park will be home to year-round recreational opportunities. The Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail (featured in the cover photo) already winds through the land. The trail will remain a key part of the nature experience as the rest of the park is created around it. In planning, three major themes evolved, based on public input: restore nature’s role on the park land, create pathways for play and health, and provide space for activities that invite the whole community. Residents of the immediate neighborhoods and people across the city gave their ideas during several EDINA PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT 2017-2018 Fall/Winter Great Lawn This area south of The Loop and north of the old clubhouse will have lots of parking available nearby. Planned features include: • Large open lawn • Field that accommodates sports and special events • Open field when no sports are in session Central Green This section of the park near the Great Lawn, old clubhouse and parking will host a variety of activities. Planned features include: • Pickleball courts • Multipurpose sport court for basketball and futsal • Small stage/yoga deck • Playground • Swings The Loop The northernmost section of the park, north of the Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail, featuring a looping trail among gardens and open spaces. Planned features include: • Rolling walking trail • Native prairie garden • Garden seating Other Features In the winter, areas of the park will feature sledding, snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing. Uses for the former clubhouse building are being discussed. The plan includes 155 parking stalls on Fred Richards Park property with the addition of a parking lot. The plan calls for additional parking from redevelopment of Pentagon Park. Outside of city property, the project anticipates 234 shared parking spaces. SKATING AT CENTENNIAL LAKES PARK Centennial Lakes Park features a 10-acre lake that is groomed daily during the winter for ice skating. Complementing the rink is a cozy, rink-side warming house, complete with indoor and outdoor fireplaces, restrooms, concessions and skate rental. Concession items include hot chocolate, pop, popcorn, hot dogs, chips and candy. Skate rental is available for $6 per pair, with sizes ranging from children’s Size 8 up to adult Size 13. Centennial Lakes Park’s 18 manicured bentgrass greens range in length from 57 to 125 feet and are surrounded by sand traps, ponds, boulders and planter beds. Players use only a putter to negotiate these heavily undulated greens. This Par 51 layout is 1,662 feet in length and takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to play. All ages and abilities are welcome. However, due to the difficulty of the course, it is recommended that players be at least 8 years old. Lawn Games The park features championship-caliber croquet and lawn bowling courts. These lush bentgrass lawns are some of the finest in the Midwest. Courts may be rented by the hour, with all equipment and written instructions included in the court fee. The park also hosts a variety of tournaments and leagues throughout the summer. Paddleboats For a more leisurely activity, take a lazy ride along the waterways of Centennial Lakes on one of our sturdy four-person paddleboats. The park’s lake consists of large bodies of water in the north and south ends connected by a channel that runs under bridges, along the putting course and past the Hughes Pavilion. Paddling by boat is a great way to see the park. Group Outings Organize your own tournament, or call ahead and we will be happy to assist you with all of the details of your event. Afterward, visit any of the great restaurants along our lakeshore, or retire to the Hughes Pavilion where you can have your caterer serve up a special meal. Call 952-833-9583 for more information. Please note that group reservations on the putting course are only available Monday through Friday until 5 p.m. No reservations can be made for weekends or evenings. 2017 Games at Centennial Lakes Park 22 EDINA PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT SKATE WITH THE HORNETS Join the Edina High School girls and boys hockey teams on the ice for open skate, autographs and photos. The piece is removed hot from the kiln, put into a metal “reduction chamber” full of combustible material that burns and alters the glaze, color and surface. Yet, all of us have the ability to be “see-ers.” To learn how to draw, we must first learn to “look” without preconceptions. We will practice this artist’s way of looking and drawing from observation, and experiment with a number of drawing techniques that have been used by artists over the centuries. This class is geared toward beginners, but is suitable for those who wish to refresh their drawing skills or just need a class or assignment to get them going. *This class meets at the Edina Senior Center, 5280 Grandview Square. At age 85, no one wants to feel like they must live out of a suitcase once they leleave their long-term home for a senior living community.”Moving an elderly member of the family is traumatic and difficult in so many ways. “People need to feel a sense of community,” states Field. To start all over again in a strange place can be a frightening and lonely experience.Jane Willette, a Resident at Heritage for six years remembered being reluctant to move from her home. But upon moving into Heritage, she was welcomed into the family. She became the official “greeter” on her oor, chatted with everyone who came to visit and was often found laughing and socializing with her friends. In her younger years as a professional, Jane was an Interior Decorator. At Heritage, she happily shared her skills and knowledge with the new Residents; always showing her apartment to those touring, or giving advice and assistance to those moving in.During Jane’s life at Heritage of Edina, she was diagnosed with Dementia and then Alzheimer’s Disease but never had to move away from her friends and the staff she had gfriends and the staff she had grown to know and love. The range of cares that can be provided by Assisted Living is so broad that it “causes confusion in the marketplace, and so often a doctor will order that a person needs ‘nursing home’ care, when what they truly need is a place like Heritage of Edina, which is much more like home,” states Field. Kate Sones, Director of Nursing and an employee of 20 years, agrees. What she likes best about Heritage is that “we really do allow people to Age in Place. Because we provide Extended Assisted Living and offer Hospice, it is rare that any of our residents need to spend time in a nursing home.” Sones recommends families question a doctor who orders nursing home care for their loved one. Unless they Unless they require staff-administered sliding-scale insulin, tube feeding, IV antibiotics, or complicated wound care, “they don’t need to be in a nursing home, but can come to Heritage of Edina to live out their days.” 3 Buildings - 57 Years of Care *Independent Living, Assisted Living, Extended Assisted Living * Located in one of the Metropolitan area’s loveliest suburbs * Beautiful, Quiet, and Safe *Minutes from elegant shopping and dining *Limousine service to personal appointments *On-site physicians * On-site 24-hour nursing staff *E *Exclusively private apartments *Private walkways between buildings adjacent to Fairview Southdale Hospital and numerous physicians * Medi-control specialized medicine management program * Full-service housekeeping, laundry, and personalized services * Flexible meal plans, coffee, and dessert socials daily * Monthly high tea birthday celebrations * * Rich activity program—over 350 per month * Month-to-month rentals 2017-2018 FALL/WINTER Activities Directory We create community through people, parks and programs.
