The fee for renewing a dog
license depends on the pet. Cost for neutered or sprayed dog is $20; non-neutered or non-
spayed dog is $30. Residents have until March 1 to renew their dog license or a $10 late fee is
charged.
Off-leash collars for 2018 can be purchased along with dog licenses. Off-leash collars cost $25
for residents and $50 for non-residents. Discounts are given for multiple dogs.
Off-leash collars can be used at Van Valkenburg Park, 4935 Lincoln Drive, which is open from
6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Strachauer Park, 6200 Beard Ave., the other off-leash area, is open
seasonally, April through October. While at the parks, dogs must wear their off-leash collars.

Home Energy Squad Can Help Save Time, Energy and Money

The City will continue to support
the Home Energy Squad in 2018 by
buying down the cost of visits to
$50 – normally $100 – for the first
160 homes, condos or townhomes
that sign up for a visit from the
Squad.
“The actual value of the visit is
over $600. It’s highly subsidized,
so it’s a really great deal for people,” said Stacy Boots Camp, Recruitment and
Outreach Coordinator with the nonprofit organization Center for Energy and
Environment (CEE). Home Energy Squad is provided by CenterPoint Energy and
Xcel Energy and the energy visits are delivered by CEE, which has nearly 40 years
of experience helping homeowners save energy and money on their utility bills.
During the typical 2.5-hour visit, the crew installs energy-saving materials,
performs diagnostic tests and helps residents develop a customized plan for
saving energy, which makes homes more comfortable and reduces utility bills.
Materials installed during the visit for no additional cost may include a
programmable thermostat, door and attic hatch weather stripping, high-
efficiency water fixtures and LED light bulbs.
“I didn’t understand the range of the LED lighting options that are available
now,” said Edina resident Julie Costin, who had an energy audit in May. “When
[the Home Energy Squad] came out, they had a whole array of different types of
LED bulbs that would be appropriate for different lamps and fixtures.”
The Home Energy Squad crew will also conduct a blower door test, infrared
camera inspection, combustion safety test on the home’s heating system and
water heater, and check attic and wall insulation levels.
“It’s easy to do,” said Costin. “Everything you learn is just another piece of the
puzzle in terms of your own house and energy savings in general.”
At the end of the visit, residents receive a custom report with prioritized
recommendations. If the home needs insulation or air sealing upgrades, residents
will receive a quote with the estimated cost to complete the work. Residents
have the option to schedule the work with the contractor that day.
“I am amazed how varied the recommendations and instant upgrades the
Home Energy Squad team have made,” said Tara Brown, the City’s Sustainability
Coordinator. “It’s truly a customized visit and well worth the $50.”
The Home Energy Squad conducts more than 5,000 energy audits every year.
According to the CEE, in 2016, the average Edina household that had a Home
Energy Squad visit saved 784 kWh annually.

I-35W Project Likely to
Affect Most Metro Drivers
Minnesota Highway 100 Will Be Detour
Route at Times
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has
started a 4.5-year, $239 million project to overhaul a section of
Interstate Highway 35W south of downtown Minneapolis.
Whether or not you take I-35W, you are likely to feel the
project’s impact sooner or later.
What stretch of I-35 does it affect?
From Interstate Highway 94 south to the Crosstown Highway
(Minnesota Highway 62).
If I use I-35W to commute, when will I be affected?
If you haven’t already, you will be at some point. Various on-
and off-ramps will close over the next four years. Expect many
lane closures and full shutdowns at times. Detours will change,
so it’s imperative to keep track of the project and plan ahead,
said MnDOT spokeswoman Denise Workcuff.
Among the major inconveniences, besides fewer lanes, will
be the closure of northbound I-35W off-ramps to the 5th
Avenue and 11th Street exits in downtown. The exact timing
of those is unclear, but it could happen as soon as this winter,
Workcuff said.
If I don’t use I-35W, will I be affected?
Yes, you probably will. There will be closures along I-94 and
U.S. Highway 65 related to the project. The construction will
force an estimated 200,000 vehicles a day off their regular
highways and freeways at times. MnDOT is directing drivers
to Minnesota Highway 100 as a north-south option to I-35W.
That means a lot more cars will be on Highway 100.
Will it be worse than the traffic when Highway 169 was
closed?
MnDOT officials aren’t sure because drivers tend to find their
own ways around closures or slowdowns.

updates as projects this large often have multiple schedule
changes.

New Year
Family Party to be Held Dec. 29
It’s time to put on your fanciest socks at Edinborough Park!
From 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, Edinborough Park will host its Pre-New Year’s Eve Party, an
annual tradition for more than five years and an exciting and fun time for kids and adults.
“It’s a very fun time. We have great attendance,” said Edinborough Park General Manager
Patty McGrath. “People really seem to enjoy it.”
Besides playing in Adventure Peak, guests will be able to get their groove on with music
from a DJ and take silly family photos in a photo booth. Kids will receive a party hat and
noisemaker for the countdown to “midnight,” which will happen at 7 p.m.
“It’s really a family event,” said Edinborough Park Assistant Manager Dawn Beitel. “It’s a
super-popular event. Adventure Peak is open, but the Great Hall will be reserved for dancing.”
Guests who buy tickets for the event before Dec. 28 will save some money and pay $10.50
per child, whereas guests buying tickets on the day of the event will pay $11.50 per child.
Annual pass holders must also purchase tickets.
