Panel Discussion on Public Art’s Impact on Community to
be Held March 1
Edina, Minn., Jan. 9, 2018 – Join the Edina Arts & Culture Commission and Edina Community
Education for a moderated panel discussion, “What Can Public Art Do For A Community,” 6:30 to
8 p.m. Thursday, March 1, at the Edina Community Center’s Normandale Auditorium, 5701
Normandale Road.
Participants will learn more about the expanding field of contemporary public art and the role
artists play in building communities. From sculpture, memorials and monuments to light and sound
installations, mosaics, murals and performance events, effective public art projects are activating
civic dialogue, creating pride and a sense of place, stimulating commerce, increasing real estate
value, and attracting tourism.
“We have some exciting names in the field of public art on the panel. Join us to see what other
communities have done and imagine the opportunities closer to home,” said Michael Frey, General
Manager of the Edina Art Center. “Participants will also have a chance to participate in a temporary,
collaborative public art project.”
The panel will be moderated by Douglas Hegley, City of Edina Arts & Culture Commissioner and
Chief Digital Officer of the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
