Edina Home Under Construction Damaged by Fire
Edina, Minn., May 1, 2018 – The Edina Fire Department was called to the 5900 block of St. John’s Avenue
at 2:34 p.m. Monday, April 30, after contractors from a neighboring project alerted others working on the site
that there was smoke coming from the home’s roof. The house is currently being remodeled.
Shortly after arrival, fire crews were able to contain the fire to the home’s attic space. Damage was noted on
the roof sheeting and supporting trusses in the area. Smoke damage was mostly contained to the second
floor. The homeowners weren’t home at the time of the fire. There were no injuries.
Fire staff believes the fire was started from sparks associated with nail grinding near the origin of the fire.
“It’s important that contractors always have a fire extinguisher or a method to cool areas that they are doing
“hot work” on during construction,” said Fire Marshal Rick Hammerschmidt.
