The Edina Heritage Award is given to individuals, families, companies or organizations that have made an outstanding contribution to the preservation, rehabilitation, restoration and use of Edina’s heritage resources. “In celebration of Preservation Month, we’re pleased to present the 2018 Heritage Award to Nate and Tiffany Mueller, designers who were living on the West Coast and found their home here in Edina,” said Assistant City Planner Emily Bodeker, who serves as staff liaison to the Heritage Preservation Commission. “People are quick to purchase older homes and tear them down to build new. The Heritage Preservation Commission would like to commend the Muellers for the interest they have taken to restore their home.” The Mueller residence is a mid-century home built in 1964. This walkout rambler in the Lake Cornelia area features large A-frame windows that immediately captured the Mueller’s interest when they were looking for a home in 2016. “They were blown away by the bones of the house. It was one of the most incredible homes they had ever seen and knew that moment that they wanted it,” said Bob Moore in his nomination. “The downside of their purchase was that the home had not been cared for. It had rotting siding and soffits. There were drainage issues with rainwater leaking into the basement. The bathrooms hadn't been touched since the home was first built and had mold growing in the walls and even some mold growing in the kitchen cupboards. The landscaping hadn't been touched in years and was overgrown, covering much of the front of the house first floor.” Despite seeing all this in person for the first time upon final inspection prior to the sale, the Muellers persevered. As they’ve made improvements, they strived to maintain period-appropriate design, while adding contemporary and personal touches. So far, they have addressed drainage issues, replaced and repainted the siding, updated both upstairs bathrooms and are currently renovating the kitchen. “We want to thank Edina for being an amazing community to welcome us after moving here from Seattle. I grew up in Minnesota, but not in Edina, and have immediately felt at home,” said Nate. “Our girls love living here. We moved here for the great school district and we’ve met some really great people. We’re excited to live in Edina for the rest of our lives and create our forever home here.” For more information about the Heritage Award, contact Bodeker at 952-826-0462 or ebodeker@EdinaMN.gov. -30-
