The work is being done between 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Hydrant flushing is important to verify proper operation of fire hydrants and also flushes sediments from the water lines. The City has 2,086 fire hydrants. “City staff will open fire hydrants to increase flows and velocities within the piping system to ‘flush’ and remove any minerals and/or deposits of iron and manganese from the pipes,” said Utilities Supervisor Nate Kaderlik. “While the City is flushing hydrants, you may notice a temporary drop in water pressure or discolored water. These are both expected results from flushing and will return to normal after the flushing activities are complete.” As Kaderlik explained, during the flushing, some residents may receive rust-colored water from their faucets. The rust-colored water is safe to drink, but could stain laundry, so City staff recommend avoiding use of washing machines between 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. during days of flushing. If water coming from the faucet is rust-colored, simply keep cold water running until it is clear. If water pressure remains low after the flushing process, check faucet screens and water filters for any trapped particles.
