Starting Sept. 6 and running 12 weeks through Nov. 15, people ages 21 and older who work or live in Edina can register for the course and learn the inner workings of the Edina Police Department. Classes take place at the Edina Police Department, 4801 W. 50th St., and the South Metro Public Safety Training Facility, 7525 Braemar Blvd. Classes are usually held on Thursday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. “During the course, participants will engage in lectures, role playing, and hands-on simulated police work including mock traffic stops, use of force training and scenarios, DWI enforcement, mock court trial and much more,” said Officer Jake Heckert, who coordinates the program with Officer Mike Sussman. The City has offered the program since 2010 and has graduated more than 150 students. Though Heckert and Sussman coordinate the program, students taking the course will have a chance to meet officers from every rank in the department as well as officers from other departments. “By the end of the class, you will have met more than half of the Edina Police Department,” said Heckert.
