Stay Safe During the Holiday Season
Edina, Minn., Dec. 4, 2014 – With families traveling and shoppers busy taking advantage of holidays deals,
thefts often increase during the holiday season. Do everything you can to avoid becoming a victim.
“Crime isn’t seasonal, but these thefts are opportunistic,” said Crime Prevention Specialist Molly Anderson.
The Edina Police Department offers the following crime prevention tips to make your holiday season safe.
At Home
Keep all doors and windows locked, including the door from the garage into the home. Close blinds
or curtains at night or while you’re away.
Be wary of strangers going door to door asking for charitable donations. If you are interested in
donating, take time to research the organization.
Turn on a light or music on when you leave your home, so it sounds and appears as if someone is
home. If you leave for an extended period of time, place a light or music on a timer.
Keep a watchful eye on your block. If you see or hear any suspicious activity, call 9-1-1.
If you expect packages to arrive in the mail, schedule deliveries for times when you are at home or
make arrangements to have your items delivered to a neighbor.
While Shopping
Park in well-lit or busy areas only and, if possible, walk with another person.
Be aware of your surroundings. Keep your head up and walk with confidence. If you feel unsafe or
uncomfortable, take action – go back into the building, find other people or contact security.
Never leave your purse or wallet unattended and take only the amount of cash and credit cards you
will use during that specific trip.
Have your keys ready in your hand before you begin walking to your car. Glance into the back seat
before getting in. Once in your vehicle, lock the doors immediately.
Always lock your car and do not leave visible items inside.
If shopping online, protect your personal information and be familiar with the company with which
you are doing business.
“We want people to report any suspicious activity to 9-1-1 as soon as they see it,” said Anderson. “The eyes
and ears of the public are an important part of effective crime prevention in our city.”
