Pedestrian Bridges to be Replaced at Centennial Lakes
Park
Edina, Minn., Aug. 22, 2018 – Construction on new pedestrian bridges at Centennial Lakes Park, 7499
France Ave. S., is set to begin Sept. 10.
The bridges, located at the north and south ends of the park, have been icons within the park since its
opening in 1991. However, the bridges cannot be traversed by wheelchairs or strollers, creating problems for
pedestrians.
“We watch people with strollers or mobility issues struggle to get up the stairs because they are almost
vertical,” said Susan Faus, the City’s Assistant Parks & Recreation Director. “They also have very narrow
stairs.”
In addition to park-goers, the stairs are a barrier for park maintenance. This results in additional staff and
equipment time to get around the lake system from the central maintenance facility, according to the
Centennial Lakes Pedestrian Bridge Concept Design Study completed by AECOM.
Beyond the accessibility, the bridges are physically in need of improvement. Though still safe, the steel
membrane is deteriorating.
The new bridges, designed by Kimley-Horn, will be made of steel and concrete. They will include slip-resistant
decks, widened walkways and LED lighting. The façade of the bridges will be covered in stone with reddish
steel accents similar to what the current bridges have.
Construction is anticipated to take 12 weeks and be complete in early December. Final landscaping will follow
in the Spring of 2019.
During construction, the perimeter pathways will be open for access around the lake. Winter activities will
remain as scheduled as construction is anticipated to wrap up before the start of the skating season.
