The Richard Mandell-designed course, which opens in Spring 2019, was among 11 courses across the country named to the 2018 list of honorees in the Design Excellence Recognition Program. The list highlights projects completed by ASGCA member-architects that address unique design challenges as well as demonstrate innovation and problem solving. “This is an impressive group of golf facilities, and I congratulate them and the architects they worked with on these projects,” said ASGCA President Jeff Blume. “Each year, the Design Excellence Recognition Program illustrates the art and science of golf course architecture that leads to facilities better serving their communities and golfers. I have so much respect for what is shown in these projects.” Mandell’s task was to turn a difficult and flood-prone 27-hole course into a challenging yet fun 18- hole course playable for everyone. In addition to fixing the flooding issues, the course design reduces maintenance, increases sustainability and provides gorgeous, expansive views of the course, Edina and the greater metro area. “The City of Edina is thrilled that the ASGCA has honored Braemar Golf Course and Richard Mandell for the innovative design,” said Joe Abood, General Manager at Braemar Golf Course. “Mandell and City staff were tasked with creating a playing experience for all ages and abilities while enhancing the course’s environmental footprint within Edina.” Representatives of the Club Managers Association of America, Golf Course Builders Association of America and Golf Course Superintendents Association of America put together the list each year. Other 2018 honorees include Banyan Cay Resort & Golf in West Palm Beach, Florida; Baylands Golf Links in Palo Alto, California; and Sunset Valley Golf Club in Highland Park, Illinois. In addition to receiving the honor, the Championship 18 will be highlighted in an upcoming issue of By Design, the ASGCA’s quarterly magazine.
