The residents and business owners who make up the Greater Southdale District Plan working group will hold the open house from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Edina Public Works & Park Maintenance Facility, 7450 Metro Blvd. People can drop in to learn more, ask questions or give feedback. The presentation will include elements of the draft plan, which provides direction for managing and shaping growth and development into the future. Topics include economic vitality and competitiveness, urban design, land use, transportation/mobility, parks and public life, and sustainability. The Southdale District is defined as the land between Minnesota Highway 62 and Interstate 494 from the Richfield border on the east to about two blocks west of France Avenue. The open house will offer more specific directions on how to reach the goals and aspirations for the district. It also will offer more detailed guidance for property owners, residents, developers and City staff and officials. Newcomers to the process are welcome. The information will be explained by work group members who have spent more than three years studying the Greater Southdale District. Questions are encouraged. The work group has framed much of its work around creating experiences in the district. “Opportunities for gathering, expansive landscapes, casual meeting spaces, community programming, public art and other memorable experiences are a key aspect of an evolved public realm that not only occurs within the district but connects other nearby places to the district,” said work group member Michael Schroeder. The 124-page draft Greater Southdale Area District Plan and the 64-page draft Design Experience Guidelines can be viewed at EdinaMN.gov/smallareaplans. The District Plan will become part of the 2018 Comprehensive Plan Update, which guides future development in the City.
