Firefighters arrived to a small working fire in the basement, but were able to quickly extinguish it with a fire extinguisher. The fire was contained to a bedroom, where a charging battery had started on fire. There were no injuries. “The residents had a fire extinguisher in the home and were able to knock down. However, the fire reignited. They then quickly exited the house and called 911. The smoke alarms were also sounding when fire crews arrived, which is important to note. If this fire would have started at night, the residents would have been awoken by their smoke alarms,” said Fire Marshal Rick Hammerschmidt. “It’s also important to share that the fire was started by a rechargeable battery. While fires like these are rare, they do happen. Someone should always be home while batteries are charging in the house.” The Edina Fire Department received mutual aid from the Richfield Fire Department.
