The City contracted with National Research Center, Inc. (NRC) to develop a six-page survey. The survey includes questions about quality of life in Edina, local policies and amenities, rating of local government services and resident use of government services and facilities. This year’s survey also asks a number of questions related to the City’s race and equity initiative and sustainability. A random and scientific sample of 1,500 households received invitations to participate in the mailed survey. A postcard was mailed to them earlier this month, alerting them that the survey would be mailed around Feb. 22. A second copy of the survey will be mailed around March 1 with a reminder to residents to complete the survey if they have not already done so. Surveys must be complete by early April. In order to hear from a diverse group of residents, the adult 18 years or older in the household who most recently had a birthday should complete the survey. Residents who receive the survey may return the survey by mail or submit the survey online. The anonymous responses of the participating households will be weighted and analyzed. “Residents who participate in the survey will help shape the future of Edina,” said City Manager Scott Neal. “The feedback we receive through the survey will help the City of Edina make decisions that affect our community.” NRC is the leader in the field of public sector research and evaluation, with clients across the country and around the globe. The firm is comprised of a skilled team of social scientists who support cities, counties, foundations and non-profit organizations in using research to help communities thrive. By using a national firm, the City of Edina has access to national benchmarks to compare findings. This year’s results will also be compared to those received in 2017 and 2015. NRC’s clients in Minnesota with surveys similar to the 2019 Edina Quality of Life Survey include the cities of Bloomington, Eagan, Eden Prairie, Lakeville, Maplewood, Ramsey, Rosemount, Shakopee and Victoria and Dakota, Olmsted, Scott, St. Louis and Washington counties. “Community surveys of this kind are an important tool for local governments to get feedback from residents on what is working well and where there are opportunities for improvement,” said Laurie Urban, Senior Research Associate with NRC.
