Hovland, Mayor PROCLAMATION WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE RATIFICATION CENTENNIAL DAY SEPTEMBER 8, 2019 WHEREAS, On January 10th, 1918, a Constitutional Amendment allowing women's suffrage was passed by the United States House; and WHEREAS, On June 4th, 1919, the United States Senate passed the I 9th Amendment and sent it out to the states for ratification; and WHEREAS, On September 8, 1919, Minnesota ratified the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which would grant national suffrage to women; and WHEREAS, Minnesota's ratification, as the 15th State, paved the way for other states to ratify the 19th Amendment; and WHEREAS, September 8th 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of Minnesota's ratification of the 19th Amendment; and WHEREAS, communities across the state are celebrating the 19th Amendment and the date of Minnesota's ratification; and NOW, THEREFORE, I, James B. Hovland, Mayor of Edina, do hereby proclaim, September 8th, 2019, as Women's Suffrage Ratification Centennial Day AND, encourage residents to commemorate September 8, 2019 as the centennial of Minnesota's ratification of the 19th Amendment, and engage and articipate in Suffrage Centennial programs and activities in honor of the largest single d expansion of voting rights in our Nation. Dated this 4th day of September, 2019.
