UNITED NATIONS DAY 2019
OCTOBER 24, 2019
WHEREAS, The United Nations ("UN") is a global multilateral organization comprised of 193 Member States which
was founded in 1945; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception the United Nations has sought to address and solve some of the world's most
pressing challenges related to peace and security, human rights, climate change, sustainable
development, food security, and humanitarian and health emergencies; and
WHEREAS, In 2015, all 193 Member States of the UN adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals—also referred to
as the Global Goals—to work toward a more just and sustainable future for all; and
WHEREAS, A recent poll conducted by the Better World Campaign in 2019 reveals that American support for the
United Nations is at a 10-year high; and
WHEREAS, The United Nations Association of the USA is a movement of Americans who believe that our interests
and values can best be advanced by supporting the lifesaving work of the United Nations; and
WHEREAS, The United Nations Association of the USA has more than 20,000 members across 200 chapters in the
United States; and
WHEREAS, The United Nations Association of the USA has declared "Our Planet. Our Future." as its theme for
UN Day 2019 in support of the United Nations' declaration that climate change is the most pressing
issue of our time; and
WHEREAS, The United Nations Association of Minnesota, Harold E. Stassen Chapter, is committed to
taking local action to support the Global Goals and the work of the United Nations; and
WHEREAS, The United Nations Association of Minnesota, Harold E. Stassen Chapter, is joining the effort in dealing
with climate change issues to ensure a healthier and more sustainable future for all the residents of our
planet; and
WHEREAS, The citizens of Edina are encouraged to participate in all the activities rel ed to UN Day.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, James B. Hovland, Mayor of Edina, do hereby proclaim, October 2019, as
UNITED NATIONS DAY
in the City of Edina, Edina and encourage all residents to participate in activiti- e atto UN Day, MN.
