Citizens’ Academy Starts Sept. 5
Edina, Minn., June 19, 2019 – Find out what working in law enforcement is really like through the Edina Police Department’s Citizens’ Academy. The program starts Sept. 5 and runs for
12 weeks through Nov. 21, and adults ages 21 and older who work or live in Edina can register for the course to get a firsthand look at how the Edina Police Department operates.
Classes are usually held on Thursday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Edina Police Department, 4801 W. 50th St., or South Metro Public Safety Training Facility, 7525 Braemar Blvd.
“The Edina Citizens’ Academy allows residents to get an inside look at what Edina Police Officers do on a daily basis, including traffic stops, investigations, administration, use of
force incidents and training. Participants are placed in a number of situations that allow them to go through the decision-making processes officers face so they get a better understanding
of the challenges,” said Officer Jake Heckert, who coordinates the program along with Officer Mike Sussman.
About 170 students have graduated since the City began offering the program in 2010.
“Residents will be instructed by 20-plus different officers from the departments, including the Chief of Police, Deputy Chief of Police, lieutenants, sergeants, patrol officers, investigators,
retired officers and the Edina Crime Analyst,” Heckert added. Throughout the duration of the program, students will have the opportunity to meet officers from every rank in the department
as well as officers from other departments.
