City Seeks Sculptors to Turn Student Art into Public Art Pieces
Edina, Minn., June 6, 2019 – The City of Edina’s Arts & Culture Commission (ACC) seeks artists to work with local students to construct a public art sculpture based on student artwork.
Eighty grade school students in the Edina school district participated in a student sculpture competition to create a 3-D sculpture that represents what “Better Together” means to them.
Edina Public Schools art teacher Shannon Steven worked with educators in Edina to present lessons to students on public art within the theme for the contest, “Better Together.”
“The student sculpture contest is a collaboration that incorporates so many organizations in Edina, including the City’s Arts & Culture Commission, the Edina school district and the
Edina Community Foundation, as well as area artists. This initiative casts a fresh eye on the theme of ‘Better Together’ as seen by our younger students. These are insightful sculptures
that both align and guide progress toward welcoming and inclusivity in the city of Edina,” said Edina Art Center General Manager Susan Tarnowski.
BetterTogetherEdina.org is the City’s online public engagement tool and the term “Better Together” has come to represent efforts to make the City more accessible and inclusive to more
members of the community.
The student submissions were evaluated by 11 judges comprised of ACC members, Edina Public Schools art teachers and representatives from the Edina Community Foundation. The two artists
who participated in last year’s Student Sculptor contest, Charles Morrill and Nick Legeros, also participated as judges. Pieces were judged on their adherence to the theme, artistic
concept, ability to translate into a large sculpture and the aesthetic value of the piece. Judges selected eight winners:

Maddie Brinkman, Izzy Olson, Aurelia Offerdahl and Abby Seaberg, fourth-graders at Concord Elementary, “Us Uniting”
Esmé Bell, fifth-grader at Normandale Elementary, “Better Together”
J. Monty Zeis and Dylan Nordin, third-graders at Normandale Elementary, “The Rainbow Mural”
Audrey Davis, Luke Sullivan and Duncan Kluis, third- and fourth-graders at Countryside Elementary, “Let’s Work Together”
Whitney Van Sloun, third-grader at Cornelia Elementary, “Blenderifous”
Ethan Koch, third-grader at Creek Valley Elementary, “The Minnesota Sculpture”
Zoe Kelman and Aheli Bardham, fifth-graders at Creek Valley Elementary, “Diversity Puzzle”
Winning pieces will be considered for reproduction as a public art sculpture in Edina. Sculptors interested in participating should have experience building public sculptures, be able
to work with children and be eager to share the public art mission of the City of Edina.
