Their goal will be to provide recommendations to inform a Flood Risk Reduction Strategy to be considered for adoption by the City Council and incorporation as a major amendment to the City’s Comprehensive Water Resources Management Plan. The Flood Risk Reduction Task Force will consist of up to seven members with a variety of perspectives and experiences on flood risk and resiliency. Task force members must live in Edina and be able to attend monthly meetings through December, as the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2019. Applications are due Thursday, June 13; appointments will be made by the end of June. Flood risk reduction is an initiative in the City’s Comprehensive Water Resources Plan and this task force is one of the ways the City is working to address flood concerns. “We’re seeing increased flood risk throughout Edina due to climate change and land use decisions and we’re hearing stories from the community about risk and some of their concerns. We’re eager to involve community experts in the process to help us get creative about how we address risk throughout Edina,” said Water Resources Coordinator Jessica Wilson. The task force will engage with the community and collect input using the City’s public engagement protocols, provide input on strategy, and make a recommendation on the final Flood Risk Reduction Strategy to be presented to the City Council for consideration. The goal of the Flood Risk Reduction Strategy is to incorporate local challenges, opportunities, knowledge and community values; include voices from throughout the city while examining the Morningside Neighborhood as a focal geographic case study; and identify action steps for building community capacity to address flood risk and resiliency in Edina.
