Two Edina Businesses Recognized for Being Breastfeeding Supportive Workspace
Edina, Minn., Sept. 16, 2019 – Especially for Children and Casa de Corazón were recognized at the Sept. 17 City Council meeting by Bloomington Public Health and the Edina Health Division
for supporting new moms when they return to work.
“At Public Health, we know the important lifelong impact breastfeeding has on the physical and emotional health of women and their babies. We also know that returning to work is a difficult
time for women with infants, and the support they receive from their employer can make all the difference in their decision to continue to breastfeed,” said Joan Bulfer, Health Specialist
for Bloomington Public Health, which provides public health services to Edina residents.
“For businesses that provide this needed support, they are not only impacting the lifelong health of babies, but improving their own bottom line.”
Both Especially for Children and Casa de Corazón were nominated for the recognition by their employees.
Bulfer said that Especially for Children, a childcare center, “believes in serving both young children and their families. Supporting mothers who are returning to work aligns with this
mission. When employees see that their employer is investing in the ‘whole person,’ they feel supported and as a result are more engaged and retention is higher.”
She added that “for any childcare business, it is challenging to keep women working after having their own children. The cost to the business is having extra staff to maintain adult/child
ratios, but the benefit to supporting breastfeeding moms is improved retention and happier employees.”
