Hovland, City Manager Scott H. Neal and Edina Public Schools Superintendent Ric Dressen will present the “2014 State of the Community” to the public Monday, March 3. The men will speak about current affairs in Edina, with a focus on the City’s vision statement of “living, learning, raising families and doing business” as the organizations build Edina for the next generation. Hovland was appointed to the Edina City Council in 1997 and first elected in 1998. He was first elected Mayor of Edina in 2004. Once Hovland completes his current four-year term, he will have the distinction of being Edina’s longest-serving mayor. The record is currently held by Fred Richards and Wayne Courtney, who each served as mayor for eight years. Hovland is currently a part of the Regional Council of Mayors, Transportation Advisory Board to the Metropolitan Council, Southwest LRT Corridor Management Committee, Southwest LRT Community Works Steering Committee, MSP Export Initiative, Greater MSP Partner Advisory Council, GEARS Board for Counties Transit Improvement Board, and Edina Community Foundation Board of Directors. He is an active member of the Edina Morningside Rotary Club. Dressen has been superintendent of Edina Public Schools since 2006. Prior to this position, he served as superintendent of Alexandria Public Schools and Waconia Public Schools. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the St. Thomas School of Engineering, Fairview Southdale Hospital and Chamber of Commerce; member of the Edina Morningside Rotary Club; an adjunct professor at St. Mary’s University of Minnesota; and a chairperson of the Superintendency Institute, a non-profit professional association. Neal began work as Edina’s fourth City Manager in 2010. Prior to joining the City staff, he served as City Manager of Eden Prairie since 2002. He has also held the positions of City Administrator for the communities of Northfield, Minn.; Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; and Norris, Tenn. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Edina Chamber of Commerce and Minnesota City Management Association and a member of the Rotary Club of Edina. He currently is chair of the Board of Directors of the Southwest Suburban Cable Commission and South Metro Public Safety Training Facility. The State of the Community will also be presented 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at Edina City Hall in the Council Chambers. The event is free and open to the public. Reservations are not necessary. The speech will later be broadcast on Edina Channels 16 and 813 at 7 p.m. Sundays, 3 a.m. and 11 a.m. Mondays, midnight Tuesdays, 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wednesdays, 7 p.m. Thursdays and 3 a.m. and 11 a.m. Fridays through March 31.
