City Continues Environmental Film Series With ‘More Than
Honey’
Edina, Minn., Feb. 27, 2014 – The second film in the Energy & Environment Commission’s film series will
explore issues facing honeybees and kicks off a series of educational events about the valuable role of
pollinators.
The City of Edina Energy & Environment Commission (EEC), in partnership with the Edina Parks & Recreation
Department and the EEC’s Local Food Task Force (LFTF), will show the documentary “More Than Honey” at
7 p.m. Friday, March 21 at Edina City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St. There is no cost to attend.
Preceding the showing, attendees can connect with local organizations beginning at 6:30 p.m. The EEC also
encourages attendees to stay following the moving for an active discussion led by the LFTF.
The movie will delve into the issue of colony collapse disorder (CCD), an issue that has resulted in U.S.
beekeepers losing an average of 30 percent of their colonies every year, and the role of pesticides, parasites,
viruses, stress and electromagnetic waves in CCD.
“Bees are important, not just to Edina, but to the entire planet,” said Dianne Plunkett Latham, member of the
EEC and Chair of the LFTF. “As bees decline, so will the productivity of many of the crops whose produce we
enjoy today. The movie will document what a precarious position honey bees are in. Hopefully residents will
then follow-up by attending the April and May programs on how to landscape to attract pollinators as well as
how to use integrated pest management to reduce their use of pesticides.”
The EEC has organized additional pollinator events in April and May to increase awareness about CCD this
spring:
“Planting for Pollinators” is being held at 10 a.m. April 19 in the Terrace Room of Arneson Acres Park,
4711 W. 70th St. Elaine Evans, a Ph.D. candidate in the University of Minnesota Bee Lab and the U’s
foremost expert on planting for pollinators, will speak about what kinds of flowers residents can plant
to attract pollinators. The talk will also discuss which common non-native plants to avoid and how to
design your yard to attract native bees by providing nesting areas.
“Integrated Pest Management to Preserve Pollinators” is being held at 10 a.m. May 24 in the Terrace
Room of Arneson Acres Park, 4711 W. 70th St. David Tobelmann, a Hennepin County Master
Gardener, will speak on what kinds of chemicals are implicated in CCD and some alternatives for
managing insect pests in your yard.
