The Arts & Culture Commission, Community Health Commission, Energy & Environment Commission, Heritage Preservation Board, Human Rights & Relations Commission, Park Board, Planning Commission and Transportation Commission all have two open seats for the 2014-2015 term. Elana Sokol has served on the Energy & Environment Commission (EEC) for the past two terms. “I really enjoy meeting the other commissioners. They treat you like you’re an equal commissioner [even though I’m serving as a non-voting youth Commission Member],” she explained. She went on to explain that the commitment is more than just a resume-builder. It takes a great deal of time and includes attending at least one meeting per month; attending sub-committee meetings as needed; and planning, promoting and attending special events. “If there is an event going on, you could put in up to two hours each week,” she said. “But you get as much as you put in.” Of her time on the Commission, she is most proud of the upcoming Environmental Forum on Monday, April 28 because it was based on one of her ideas. “We use so many electronics in my school and each item needs an outlet and that’s really using a lot of electricity. I had the idea about using solar panels at charging stations. So [the EEC] made the April 28 event all about solar,” she explained. “That’s been really fun to get involved with; it’s been really engaging.” Applications will be accepted through the end of May, with selected candidates beginning their year-long term in September. Youth board and commission members must be Edina residents. Most candidates are high school juniors or seniors. For more information and to apply, visit www.EdinaMN.gov/advisory-boards-commissions.
