The restrictions began April 14. Spring fire restrictions limit fires until foliage starts to green up, which means that while residents are still able to apply for recreational fire permits, they won’t be able to have a recreational fire until the restrictions are lifted. According to the DNR, most wildfires in Minnesota occur during April and May. More than 95 percent of these fires are caused by human error. The restrictions typically last from four to six weeks until sufficient vegetative growth occurs. DNR Wildfire Prevention Coordinator Larry Himanga said that spring fire restrictions have resulted in a dramatic decrease in both the numbers and sizes of accidental fires. Fire conditions may change quickly over the next few weeks. For more information, call the Edina Fire Department at 952-826-0330. -30-
