Construction to Begin on Edina’s Hazelton Road
Edina, Minn., May 1, 2014 – On Tuesday, May 6, the City of Edina will start preparing Hazelton Road
between France Avenue and the Edina Promenade crossing for reconstruction.
“With the new Byerly’s store and additional apartments, we anticipate an increase in traffic which necessitates
modifications to Hazelton Road,” said Andrew Plowman, the City’s on-site representative of the project.
“Trying to cross Hazelton Road – whether by car or by foot – is difficult, and this will help alleviate those
safety issues.”
As part of this project, Hazelton Road will be modified to two lanes and a roundabout will be constructed just
west of the Promenade crossing, at the entrances of Guitar Center and the east entrance to the new Byerly’s,
apartments and Think Bank.
Hazelton Road was designed with bicyclists and pedestrians in mind. While sidewalks exist along the road
today, there is little or no boulevard space between vehicle traffic and pedestrians. With the addition of a
landscaped median and the roundabout, the goal is to make Hazelton Road more pedestrian friendly while still
accommodating vehicular traffic.
“This project will fit nicely with the France Avenue pedestrian improvement project that started in April,”
Plowman said. “The Hazelton Road project is a continuation of the same theme, which is to make it easier for
pedestrians to travel up and down and to France Avenue, and around the greater Southdale area.”
Construction activities will begin in early May. To minimize the duration and cost of the project, a partial
closure of Hazelton at France will take place from early June to early July. Businesses along Hazelton Road will
remain open during construction and a detour will be posted.
