The public art will be on display from June 2014 through May 2015. “It really is fun and it adds so much to the quality of life in Edina. It promotes Edina as a top-quality city in the state,” explained Public Art Working Group Chair Barbara La Valleur. “I love doing it and I love working with the artists.” This year, the group has selected 10 new sculptures for display. They include:  “Density Housing for the Modern Urban Fairy” by Allison Ruby, located on the Edina Promenade  “Mantle” by Steve Elliott, located on the Edina Promenade  “Dynamic Duo” by James Bearden, located on the Edina Promenade  “Faith, Hope, Love” by James Gabbert, located on the Edina Promenade  “Roman Astrolabe” by Peter Vanni, located on the Edina Promenade  “Medicine Wheel” by Kevin Komadina & Joel Carter, located on the Edina Promenade  “Honk!” by Chris Gustafson, located at 50th & France  “How to Build a Birdhouse” by Michael E. Kmiotek, located at 50th & France  “3 Dancing Sand Hill Cranes” by Jim Dehne, located at 50th & France  “Argonaut” by James Bearden, located at Grandview Square Park  “Leaping Hare” by Nick Legeros, located at Grandview Square Park “There is exciting news for 2014. Two sculptors, [who also are practicing physicians], are collaborating on a piece entitled ‘Medicine Wheel,’” said Edina Art Center Manager Michael Frey, staff liaison to the Arts & Culture Commission. “We have not had a joint collaboration before. Six of the artists are repeat artists with very strong work.” This is the 10th anniversary of Public Art in Edina. To kick the exhibit off, the Arts & Culture Commission will host an opening reception 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at Pinstripes at 3849 Gallagher Drive in Edina. “It’s open to the public. It’s sponsored by Pinstripes and many of the artists come. Last year was our biggest event. We had over 100 people there,” said La Valleur. “We’ll have on display photographs of all the sculptures. … So people can be there to see the sculptures and meet with the artists.” City of Edina • 4801 W. 50th St. • Edina, MN 55424 The public can also participate by voting in the People’s Choice Awards. From the opening through Sept. 30, 2014, the public can vote for their favorite sculpture. The first place award winner will receive $1,000. The second place award is $750 and the third place award is $500. The People’s Choice winners will be invited to exhibit their sculptures for an additional year for which they will receive honorariums of $500. Votes can be left in the yellow voting boxes near the sculptures. Only one vote per person will be counted. All sculptures will be actively marketed for purchase by the Public Art Working Group to individuals and local businesses.
