On Saturday, May 17, the City will host an “Organize Your Neighborhood” workshop at the Edina Senior Center, 5280 Grandview Square. “[All it takes is] a group of residents who are motivated and have energy to start getting their community engaged,” said Project Coordinator MJ Lamon. “As people move in and move out, neighborhood associations help build a sense of community. Neighborhood associations can play a key role by communicating with residents about redevelopment, park projects and small area plans. Neighborhood associations do fun stuff, too – like Night to Unite, book clubs and picnics.” According to the Pew Research Center, nearly 60 percent of people either don’t know any or only know a few of their neighbors. Through recognized neighborhood associations, the City hopes to foster communication between residents and City staff and officials, increase interaction between neighbors and build better community through cooperative action. At the workshop, residents can learn the beginning steps to organize a neighborhood association. The workshop will include two sessions:  Session 1 – 9:30-10:30 a.m., Neighborhood Association 101. Learn the basics of the City’s Neighborhood Association policy, recognition process and available online communication tools, and how to start organizing your neighborhood  Session 2 – 10:45-11:30 a.m., Digging Deeper. Discuss neighborhood organization in an open forum with City staff. To attend, RSVP to Lamon at neighborhoods@EdinaMN.gov or 952-826-0360.
