City to Kick Off Small Area Planning, Seeks Volunteers
Edina, Minn., June 4, 2014 – The City of Edina will kick off work on a small area plan for the commercial
node at Wooddale Avenue and Valley View Road with a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at the
Edina Senior Center, 5280 Grandview Square. Residents and business representatives are encouraged to
attend.
At the meeting, attendees will learn about the small area planning process and brainstorm about assets and
opportunities in the area.
“This is a great opportunity for local residents and businesses to begin to provide input on the long-term
vision for the area,” said Assistant City Manager Karen Kurt. The City will also solicit volunteers at the
meeting to serve on a small area planning team. The team will work with City staff and consultants to design
and implement the public engagement process.
The City’s Comprehensive Plan identifies Wooddale/Valley View as an area of potential redevelopment. Like
other areas of the City, a small area plan for this area is beneficial to make sure any future redevelopment
meets the needs and desires of residents. Small area plans provide the City with guidance on land use,
transportation, housing, environmental protection and natural spaces. Small area plans are intended to be
implemented over time as opportunities arise, but do not guarantee how or when redevelopment may occur.
The City anticipates a six- to eight-month timeframe to develop and approve the small area plan. Most of the
public engagement is scheduled to take place during the month of October. A draft plan is expected in
November or December, with Planning Commission and City Council review following in January or
February.
Interested residents or businesses can volunteer for the small area planning team by visiting the City’s website
at www.EdinaMN.gov. Individuals can also stay informed about the Wooddale Avenue and Valley View Road
small area process by signing up for City Extra at www.EdinaMN.gov.
