The “Birds and Winged-Beings” exhibition began Thursday, June 5, and will run through Thursday, June 19. This collection features drawings, collages and flights of paint. “[Maarja] is an artist of many spectrums,” said Edina Art Center General Manager Michael Frey. Roth’s talent and creativity is undeniable as she works in everything from watercolors and drawing to paper-making. Roth, born in Red Wing and raised in Minnetonka, is a true local and has been pursuing art as a profession since 1973. Roth’s works from “Birds and Winged-Beings” feature a close-up view and a distant impression of flying, visual cords and symphonies of color. Much of Roth’s teaching and interest has been focused around natural things because of her surroundings. She teaches a program that combines both environmental aspects with art and has a lot of natural diversity around her home – “a pond and incredible birds,” added Roth. “This particular collection was a way for me to work with small things in detail with a flash of color [to portray] the magic birds have, in their flights, their songs and their color. “I believe art is a universal language which brings beauty, humor, empathy, compassion and understanding to our problem solving.” “This collection is really of the essence,” said Frey. Her depiction of nature highlights the natural beauty that is emerging as the days get warmer. “The goodness we learn and share close to home at community art centers is empowering and far-reaching. Such centers provide a familiar place for anyone and everyone to view, create, support, challenge and become involved in art in all forms. Local, easily-accessed centers encourage an artful life,” Roth noted. The Foss Gallery is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
