To increase safety, police to warn bicyclists who violate law
Edina, Minn., July 29, 2014 – In all states, cyclists are deemed by law to be drivers of vehicles and are
entitled to the same rights on the road as motorists. Motorists and bicyclists must follow the same laws.
“All of us need to work together to keep the roadways safe,” said Sgt. Tim Olson. “Our goal is to increase
safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists, especially when more and more bicyclists and motorists are
sharing the road.”
To educate bicyclists about the laws of the road, the Police Department has begun issuing written warnings to
those who violate state statues and ordinances. Education will include a written warning. In extenuating
circumstances, a citation may be issued. The Police Department will continue its regular enforcement of traffic
laws relating to motorists.
Police are looking for compliance with the following:
Bicycles should be properly lit at night with reflectors and a light.
Bicyclists should follow traffic laws, including stopping at stop lights and stop signs and signaling turns.
Bicyclists should ride no more than two abreast where space allows and single-file where space
doesn’t allow.
“We want the roadways in Edina to be a safe place for all,” said Olson, who is part of a team of City staff
from many departments working on a street safety campaign to be introduced later this year. “That’s
something we all need to be a part of to make it happen.”
