FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
To increase safety, police to warn bicyclists who violate law
Edina, Minn., July 21, 2014 – Due to an increase in accidents involving bicyclists and vehicles and to
educate bicyclists about the laws of the road, the Edina Police Department has begun issuing written warnings
to bicyclists who violate state statutes and ordinances.
“All of us need to work together to keep the roadways safe,” said Sgt. Tim Olson, who’s leading the
Department’s initiative to educate bicyclists and gain compliance with various state statutes and ordinances.
“Our goal is to increase safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists, especially when more and more
bicyclists and motorists are sharing the road.”
Education will include a written warning to those who violate the statutes or codes. In extenuating
circumstances, a citation may be issued.
Police are looking for compliance with the following:
Bicycles should be properly lit at night with reflectors and a light.
Bicyclists should follow traffic laws, including stopping at stop lights and stop signs and signaling turns.
Bicyclists should ride no more than two abreast where space allows and single-file where space
doesn’t allow.
“We want the roadways in Edina to be a safe place for all,” said Olson. “That’s something we all need to be a
part of to make it happen.”
