Abood began work at Braemar on July 7. Abood grew up in the golfing community on the East Coast, helping to run a family-owned driving range. He attended East Carolina University for a time and finished his business administration degree at the University of Maryland. Following college, Abood went on to work for KemperSports for 16 years where he managed six different courses in Maryland and New Jersey. “Joe was selected because of his tremendous range of skills, knowledge, experience and passion for the golf,” explained Assistant Parks & Recreation Director Susan Faus. “We are thrilled to have someone with Joe’s talents leading our golf course operations.” During his time with KemperSports, Abood managed a course in Union County, New Jersey, very similar to Braemar Golf Course. That experience uniquely positions him to run Braemar Golf Course. The Union County course was a municipally owned golf club that the county decided to revitalize. The course also included a learning center like Braemar Golf Dome. Abood also noted that Union County made the difficult decision to close one of its courses – similar to Edina’s difficult decision of closing Fred Richards Golf Course at the end of the 2014 season. His most recent position was located in New Jersey and Abood was excited for the opportunity to find a Minnesota-based position. “The main reason we came out here is that my wife’s family is from around here. New Jersey is not where I wanted to raise my family,” he explained. “I saw this opportunity and I applied.” As General Manager, Abood will manage seven full-time employees in addition to the overall operations at Braemar. Braemar features 27 regulation holes, a 9-hole executive course, a pro shop, driving range, practice putting green, indoor golf dome, banquet and meeting rooms and other amenities.
