The Citizens’ Academy began in 2009 and was created to give those who live or work in Edina an informative, interactive look behind the scenes of the Edina Police Department. “The goal is to give participants an inside look at the operations of the Police Department,” said Sgt. Brian Hubbard. “We’ve tried to make it very hands-on compared to other programs and the feedback we’ve gotten over the last five years has been amazingly positive.” As part of the 11-week course, participants will make mock traffic stops, tour the Hennepin County jail, learn about the area drug and financial crimes task forces, practice self-defense tactics, follow the course of a criminal investigation, process a crime scene and meet one of the Department’s award-winning K-9s. “I thought it was eye-opening,” said Cindy Larson, who participated in the program last year. “You get to see and learn about a lot of things you would not otherwise get to experience.” Participants who complete the course will receive an Academy polo shirt, a certificate and local recognition as a graduate. “Every session was so interesting and had so many different topics,” said Larson. “You gain a whole new appreciation for what our Police Officers are doing for us on a daily basis.” “I just think it’s a great opportunity for us to showcase a great department and a great way for residents to see officers as people, experts and outstanding professionals,” said Hubbard. Classes will be held weekly from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays. The deadline for registration is Friday, Sept. 5 and costs $25. Most classes are held at the Edina Police Department, 4801 W. 50th St., or South Metro Public Safety Training Facility, 7525Braemar Blvd. Classes are limited to 20 participants and are filled on a first come, first served basis.
