Carlson is assigned to the middle and elementary schools and Boosalis to the high school. The two fill spots left by Brian Hubbard and Aaron White, who were recently promoted within the Police Department to the rank of Sergeant. “The City of Edina and Edina Public Schools have a strong partnership and our School Resource Officers are on the front line, serving as a resource to students, parents and staff,” said White, who is training Carlson and Boosalis for the job. “While a large percentage of every day police work tends to be reactive in nature, our School Resource Officers are in a unique position to take an almost entirely proactive approach that greatly benefits the youth in our community.” Carlson has been a Police Officer for 12 years and is active in the Department’s participation in the annual Safety Camp, seasonal bike patrol and Citizens’ Academy. Carlson has also served on a Mobile Crisis Team with the St. Paul Youth Service Bureau and had worked in residential juvenile corrections. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to assist the schools in ensuring a safe and comfortable learning environment, and to support their efforts to manage a diverse and dynamic population,” said Carlson. “I’m proud to represent the Edina Police Department to the school district and each school’s community of children, parents and staff. I’m looking forward to finding creative and effective solutions to challenges as they arise.” Boosalis has been affiliated with the Edina Police Department for many years. He began his involvement in 1996 with a police mentorship program and becoming an Explorer in the Edina/Eden Prairie Police Explorer Post. Boosalis joined the Edina Police Reserves in 2003 and served as a Community Service Officer in Eden Prairie from 2001 to 2005 while attending college. He was hired as a Police Officer in Eden Prairie in 2006 and worked there until 2007 when he was hired by Edina. “This will be a new challenge -- a bit out of the norm. It’s a whole other aspect of police work. I’ve worked with the Explorers, but this will be new for me and a new experience that will help me grow as an officer,” he said. “I’m looking at continuing to build strong relationships between the schools and the Police Department.” Carlson and Boosalis began their new assignments on Wednesday, Aug. 20, and look forward to getting to know students in the weeks and months to come.
