The City will begin picking up sandbags Saturday, Aug. 23. For those who cannot deconstruct their sandbag walls before the weekend, special pickups can be arranged. Even after the creek began to recede, it remained high for weeks, and a moderate rainfall could have made the creek spike again. Public Works Director Brian Olson said now that the creek has fallen to near-normal levels, sandbag levees can be deconstructed and set out for pick-up. “It’s been a rough summer along Minnehaha Creek,” Olson said. “The City has been watching [the creek] closely, and we finally think we’re safe to remove sandbags for the season.” On Saturday, Aug. 23, the City will begin picking up sandbags in the area of Cascade Lane at 9 a.m., then move south to the area of Sunnyslope and Woodcrest/Woodland. Staffing and sandbag volume will determine timing following the 9 a.m. start. Sandbags should be piled in the homeowner’s front yard or in driveway prior to 9 a.m. Olson said that, while the City will pick up and dispose of sandbags, it is up to residents to deconstruct sandbag walls and transport them to the front of their homes or driveways. Those who are unable to make the scheduled pick-up date and time can schedule a pickup time by contacting Public Works Coordinator Dave Goergen at 952-826-0312. For more information, contact the City’s Public Works Department at 952-826-0375. -30-
