The two discussions, which focus on residential fire sprinklers and changing the City’s reference to Columbus Day, are available until Nov. 30. In January 2015, a new State law will go into effect, requiring fire sprinklers in all new homes larger than 4,500 square feet. Eighty-five percent of all fire deaths occur in homes, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Automatic fire sprinklers cut the risk of dying in a house fire by 80 percent. Yet, less than 5 percent of all homes, including multi-unit homes, have sprinklers. In this discussion, the City asks whether or not residents think residential fire sprinklers should be required for all homes (regardless of size), if they think the potential benefit outweighs the cost of the system, and if they think sprinklers could further decrease the number of fire calls and major structure fires. The second Monday in October is a national holiday recognized as Columbus Day, which the City does not recognize. A proposal by the Human Rights & Relations Commission to establish the second Monday in October as “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” follows local, state and international movements to recognize the contributions of indigenous people in culture and history, and encourages educational programs to be held. In this discussion, the City asks whether the City should establish Indigenous People’s Day and how it should be recognized. Residents can weigh in at www.SpeakUpEdina.org, or send written comments to City of Edina, Attn: HRRC, 4801 W. 50th St., Edina, MN 55424. In October, the City gathered feedback on dog parks. Questions posed range from whether Edina should add more off-leash dog areas (OLAs), where more could go and whether or not residents use existing OLAs. Feedback from the discussion will be presented to the City Council Nov. 18. Other discussions on the site include the 2015-2019 Capital Improvements Plan, open until Nov. 19, and Vision Edina, open until Dec. 31, to gather feedback on the City’s shared community vision.
