At the urging of the Minnesota Cities Climate Caucus, the Edina City Council approved a resolution asking for state and federal help in responding to climate change. In 2019, the City Council approved a resolution committing to take actions that protect future generations from the consequences of climate change. Last month, the City approved another resolution building on that commitment, joining with other cities to share how climate change impacts local governments, to report steps cities can take and call on state and federal governments to take action. “With this declaration, the City of Edina is once again ratifying its duty to act in this climate crisis, as they did last December with the publication of the Climate Action Plan,” Hilda Martinez. “As member of the community and chair of the Energy & Environment Commission, it is really encouraging to see the strong commitment Mayor Hovland and City Council members have on this topic.” Commissioner Cory Lukens agreed. “"We are facing a climate crisis. Unfortunately, politicians in Washington, D.C. are unable to agree on the basic facts, so cities like Edina must act. Our recently passed Climate Action Plan takes steps at the municipal level to address this climate emergency, and to make lasting impact.” The Minnesota Cities Climate Caucus is a statewide group of City Council members and mayors working to take unified action to address climate change. City Council Member Carolyn Jackson is part of the group. -30-
