City Encourages Participation in ‘No Mow May’
Edina, Minn., April 5, 2022 – To increase the pollinator habitat during a critical seasonal transition, the City will temporarily suspend laws requiring residents to mow in May.
The goal of “No Mow May” is to allow yards to grow unmown for the month of May, creating habitat and forage for early season pollinators. This is particularly important in urban areas
where floral resources are often limited.
“Participating in No Mow May supports all of Minnesota's pollinators – native bees, honeybees, ants, flies, beetles, birds, butterflies and more,” said Sustainability Manager Grace Hancock.
“Avoiding mowing protects overwinter habitat for native bees and allows plants rich in nectar and other nutrients to grow as pollinator food at a time when pollinators need it most.
More healthy and more biodiverse pollinators help Minnesota's urban landscapes and statewide agriculture thrive.”
Homeowners and renters with landlord consent must register their lawns to participate in No Mow May. All other properties must comply with Edina’s City Code for turf and weed management.
Register online at BetterTogetherEdina.org/no-mow-may. Once registered, participants can pick up a lawn sign after May 2 at Edina City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St., to show their support and
explain to passersbys why their lawn is not mowed.
Those interested in learning more are encouraged to attend one of Edina’s virtual Earth Month workshops presented by Metro Blooms with support from the City:
“Creating a Resilient Yard,” 6-30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 19. Learn how to create resilience in your yard using site planning, rain gardens, alternatives to conventional turf laws,
trees, native plantings and more. The workshop includes one-on-one design assistance for your yard from Metro Blooms landscape designers, Hennepin County master gardeners and Minnesota
Water Stewards.
“Creating a Bee Lawn,” 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, April 21. Get a how-to guide on creating a bee lawn. Learn the steps for converting a traditional turfgrass monoculture lawn into a beautiful,
flowering bee lawn that promotes pollinator health, water quality and natural resource conservation.
The workshops will be presented virtually. Cost is $15, though scholarships are available upon request. Register online.
